Ensure your rabbit's health with vital vet check-ups and protection against pests.
The domestic rabbit is one of the more common alternative pets we see. Rabbits have been domesticated for thousands of years and generally make good pets for adults and older children. If well cared for, they can live 7 to 10 years in captivity. Like all other pets, rabbits also need veterinary care. The most common nutritional disease seen in rabbits is obesity. Captive rabbits often get far too heavy for their own good. This leads to many problems, including vitamin deficiency. Overweight rabbits are also prone to joint disease and various other complications.
The ideal weight for a rabbit is dependent on their breed. An easy way to track your rabbit’s weight is to check if you can easily feel their ribs under the skin. If you cannot see but feel them, it means they are closer to their ideal weight.
Commercially prepared rabbit feed is generally accepted as a base diet. Loose hay should be provided regularly to prevent hairballs and provide them with a source of fiber. Rabbits appreciate the occasional treat of fresh fruits or vegetables, but it is important not to overdo this, as it may cause serious dietary upset.
