Bloodwork Services

Blood tests are important diagnostic tools for determining your pet's health status.

Blood tests are one of the most important tools in a veterinarian’s toolkit. They help vets detect, identify, diagnose, and treat diseases or disorders. To the naked eye of veterinarians, many signs of diseases might not be visible. Animals, especially cats, are masters of disguise. They are great at hiding signs of discomfort or illness. In such cases, blood tests provide valuable information in uncovering and understanding symptoms and diseases. When are blood tests necessary?

A veterinarian might order a blood test in the following situations (remember, this is not an exhaustive list):

  • On the first veterinary visit: Puppies and kittens are usually asked to get a blood test on the first visit to assess their baseline health and see if they have any existing diseases.
  • Signs of sickness: When pets are brought in sick, blood tests are run to identify what illness afflicts them.
  • Pre-surgical tests: Blood tests are a standard procedure before surgery for vets to determine the amount of anesthesia to give your pet.
  • Annual or senior wellness exams: Blood tests are routine procedures during wellness exams for cats and dogs to see health indicators.

What are some commonly performed blood tests?

Some commonly performed blood exams are a complete blood count, a complete blood chemistry panel that provides information about your pet’s liver, pancreas, and kidney; a urinalysis to identify infections or inflammation in the urinary tract; and a thyroid function test to examine the functioning of your pet’s thyroid gland.
